(South Korean Army) MELBOURNE, Australia — Australia has selected Boeing’s AH-64E Apache Guardian as it’s next armed AH-1Z Viper: The Bell AH-1Z Viper is the latest iteration of the Vietnam-era Cobra attack helicopter. While outwardly the AH-1Z looks like its predecessors, it is basically a completely new machine. The AH-1Z maintains a slew of long range sensors centered around the Longbow Fire Control Radar System. These guide the variety of missiles that the Viper can deploy such as AIM-9 Sidewinders and AGM-114 Hellfires. Furthermore, the Viper has 75 percent fewer moving parts than other comparable four-bladed rotor systems.
August 2018 - Bell Helicopters has received an award totaling $510 million to build twenty-nine new AH-1Z Viper model attack helicopters for the United States Marine Corps. November 2018 - Bahrain has confirmed an order for twelve Viper attack helicopters. December 2018 - The Viper is a contender for a Japanese attack helicopter requirement.
Both helicopters have been critical components of American military air dominance and are examples of technological and mechanical quality and innovation. Bell's AH-1Z Viper is utilized by the United States Marine Corps (USMC), while Boeing's AH-64 Apache remains the U.S. Army's primary attack helicopter.
